“Bruce Forman is a wonderful guitarist; extremely versatile and very musical…a first-rate accompanist and soloist.”
“He truly is a keeper of the jazz guitar flame.”
”Bruce Forman is one of the great lights of our age.”
Bruce Forman, acclaimed a “prodigious talent” by DownBeat, has developed his dazzling guitar signature over 20-plus years as a professional musician. Embracing the spirit of musical freedom expressed by bebop wizards Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery and others, Bruce has cultivated what Option Magazine calls “a truly original style.”
His 2003 Blujazz release, “Dedication, Bootleg Vol. 1,” captures the essence of that style. In Bruce’s words, “This CD is a compilation of a concept that I’ve been working on for years. It is a compilation of tunes both original and reworked standards that exemplify some of the qualities of the great masters who have been such a profound affect on me and have guided my path throughout my years of playing. Because these artists had so much to offer, in so many ways, I found myself zeroing in on a particular aspect of their style and then added my signature to the mix. In many cases even in the context of an original by the artist I may have made changes that I felt best suited my style, that of the band, and strengthened what I wanted to bring forth in our evocation and respect of that person’s artistry. I hope that through our efforts you will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of those talented American originals and that you enjoy listening to this as much as we have enjoyed playing it”.
Based in northern California, Bruce has performed at most major jazz festivals and clubs around the world. Luminaries such as Stanley Turrentine, Grover Washington Jr., Bobby Hutcherson, Ray Brown, Eddie Jefferson and Richie Cole have featured him in their bands. He has recorded with Tom Harrell, George Cables, Mark Murphy, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Knepper, Charlie Shoemake among others.
In addition, he has been labeled a “composer of rare merit” by Leonard Feather and praised by Jazz Times for his harmonic sophistication and improvisational finesse. In January 2000, he founded JazzMasters Workshop, a mentoring program for jazz guitar that continues to be free to student-age musicians.
