What’s the Ian Torres Big Band all about?

The Ian Torres Big Band is Chicago-based group that plays compositions and arrangements by the leader, trumpeter Ian Torres. Having been a part of the vibrant Chicago creative music scene since 2007, the group is poised to release their debut album, January, The Birth and Development of the Ian Torres Big Band.

There are several things that make this band quite different than what you might think of when you hear the words big band.  First and foremost, the music is unique and fresh to the big band genre in that its main goal is to inspire the musicians in the band. This allows those musicians the space and canvas necessary to create amazing improvisations, and this band is full of the top musicians Chicago has to offer. Also the band’s sound is quite different than that of the traditional big band. It’s the perfect balance and blend of acoustic and electric instruments, creating a variety of unique and interesting timbres and orchestrations.

January includes four tracks from a 2008 session, one live track recorded in 2009 at the Jazz Showcase, and six of the band’s newest pieces just recorded this past June.  The result is a unique album representing the birth and development of this one of a kind big band.
